Top Tips for Working from Home

For many businesses, working from home is becoming a new way forward in the current climate.

Working from home can be a major adjustment, but it’s really important to look after yourself as well as your productivity levels. Even those of you who may be used to working from home – this is something totally different and can still be very challenging.

For those of you that are new to working from home or are just curious about this blog post keep reading to find out my top tips to stay productive and alert in this situation.

Keep to your working hours

It can be easy to lose track of time when working in an unfamiliar environment. It can also be tempting to press that snooze button on the alarm a few too many times, however this will create bad habits and reduce consistency.

Sticking to consistent hours like you would in the office means you are likely to stay focussed on getting work done as well as being available to be contacted by your team members when required. I don’t think they would appreciate you answering the phone in your ‘I’ve just woken up voice’.

Take a break

It is important to take short breaks when you can to keep your brain active. Concentrating for long periods of time will hinder the quality of your work. Walk away from your workspace every so often, grab a snack, make a call to a colleague or get some fresh air. These breaks will give you a chance to reflect and go back to work with a fresh perspective.

Dedicated workspace

I know it’s tempting to work from you bed or the sofa for comfort, however creating a ‘home office’ can increase your productivity. Sit at a table or desk to create a consistent workspace allowing your brain to distinguish between relaxation and work. Set your workspace up like you would in the office to give some familiarity to the setting.

Food preparation

Being at home may make you feel motivated to cook something amazing for lunch but this will ‘eat’ into your work time. Prepare your lunch before you start work as you would if you were going into the office for the day. This will ensure you spend your lunch break eating rather than preparing your food and you will be back at work for your usual time.

Tidy up

A messy desk causes an imbalance and a chaotic atmosphere which can lead to a chaotic mindset. Keep your workspace organised and tidy as well as the rest of the house. A tidy house means you won’t be tempted to procrastinate by doing cleaning tasks.

Communicate

If you’re someone that is used to the ‘office buzz’ it can be very difficult to adjust to home working. Feeling isolated from the rest of the world can be challenging. Talk to as many people as possible, set up video meetings with colleagues to have some face to face contact and talk about daily life. Chances are that most of your family members will also be working from home so spend lunchtimes and breaktimes with them to keep your spirits up.
